- Indicator e) Investigate the role of literature, visual arts, music, newspapers, photographs, and other artifacts in obtaining information about past societies.
Learning about past societies can be difficult. Studying prehistory, we have to examine fossils and findings from archaeological sites to make inferences on how people once lived. In studying ancient Egypt, we are able to learn about a past society through some of its literature, however this is much different than reading written accounts of something that happened 50-100 years ago, as these readings come with their own limitations.
Activity I- How do past society's literature influence future civilizations? Follow the link http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/liter.htm to learn about how ancient Egyptian literature influenced both Egyptian culture and/or future civilizations.
- FIND 7 examples of stories (ideas) from this literature which are found in future or present-day Western society (literature/beliefs)
Activity II - What inferences can we make about a society (how they lived, the technology/skills they had, their beliefs) based on the literature they wrote? Follow the link http://www.gutenberg.org/files/15932/15932-h/15932-h.htm to find a large collection of Egyptian literature. Choose 2 stories (chapters) from the Table of Contents. For each:
- Give a three sentence summary of the story/chapter
- Make three inferences about Egyptian society
- Write 1-2 sentences for each inference explaining how/why you made that specific inference.
Major Project
DR 9.3 - Assess the relationship of the natural environment in the development of a society.
Ancient Egypt lasted a thousand years longer than Christianity has been around, yet when we think about Egypt, it often tends to blend together. Ancient Egyptians were incredible architects and their contributions in mathematics and technology is outstanding. Your project will have you examine how Egyptians emerged from the desert to create remarkable agricultural and building techniques that were unlike anywhere else in the world.
