Roots of Society
As Grade 9 students you will be exploring worldviews of past societies and making connections between the past and the present. You will consider how worldviews are shaped and how they are expressed by people living in particular times and places. You will examine issues related to contact between societies with differing worldviews. You will explore diverse sources of historical information, including oral histories, images, literature, and the arts. Through this inquiry into past societies, you will reflect upon your own worldviews, assess the influences of the past on the present, and further develop your historical consciousness.
Students will be exploring at least one historical indigenous society of North America, Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, Aztec, Incan, and Mayan civilizations, Medieval Europe and Renaissance Europe, and Ancient China.

Note from Mr. Rowland:
As a grade 9 student, the success you will experience in this course is ultimately up to you. Full participation in class and keeping on top of your assignments will ensure that you earn a grade you are happy with. I hope to present a course that you find interesting, challenging, and fun. Different students learn in different ways and at varying speeds; if you are unclear with something covered in class or need a little extra help, please make sure you tell me and make arrangements to meet with me for help. I can help facilitate your learning, but as stated above: your success is up to you.
